History

The Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Tartu was created in 1967. Before that the teaching and research took place in many different faculties. In 2001 the faculty joined with Informatics as the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics.

The Deans of the Faculty of Mathematics were:

  • Associate Professor Endel Jürimäe (1967-1974)
  • Professor Ülo Lumiste (1974-1980)
  • Associate Professor Mati Kilp (1980-1989)
  • Associate Professor Ivar-Igor Saarniit (1989-1994)
  • Professor Toivo Leiger (1994-2003)
  • Professor Mati Kilp (2003-2012)
  • Professor Tõnu Kollo (2012-2015)

In 2016 the institutes of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics joined as one Institute of Mathematics and Statistics of the Faculty of Science and Technology. In the beginning of 2020 the institute moved from Liivi street to the new Delta centre.
